I was visiting the cemetery in Westwood a few months ago and I came upon Charlie's grave. I admit to feeling sad that I did not know him well, although he lived only a few streets over from my neighborhood. My memory of Charlie is that he was a quiet boy who worked hard delivering heating oil with his father and his brothers. At the time, I was too shy to speak with him as I absurdly believed that my tallness and his short stature was somehow a barrier to my ever speaking to him at all. Also, I was afraid for him to know that my family was poor, which I imagined he probably knew, based on how seldom we could afford to buy the oil that his father sold. Now, after more than fifty years I am thinking about Charles and I am hoping that he led a happy and fulfilled life. Even though we barely knew each other, I don't think he would object if I left a small plant at his grave the next time I drive by. Rest in peace, Charlie.

Thank you, Suzanne, for those beautiful words about Charlie. I too did not know him well, but I know him (and you) better through your thoughtful comments. Rest in peace, Charlie, and all the best to you, Suzanne.
